Consistency is a key aspect of home design, and it’s an important consideration when planning a window replacement project. A question that often comes up during this stage is whether or not all windows should match, and in today’s post, local window company Renewal by Andersen® of British Columbia shares insight on this question.

The Role of Curb Appeal

Much has been written about the role of curb appeal in relation to home design, particularly in how it affects home value and how it dictates design aspects from the color palette to the roofing slope. The human eye loves symmetry, and it’s not uncommon to choose matching windows for all sides of the house.

While curb-facing windows are part of the building’s “face,” it shouldn’t compromise the benefits derived from having a different window style in other areas. Curb appeal is not the only factor to consider, given that it only applies to one or two sides of the house.

Factors To Consider When Choosing Windows

So the short answer to the question above — should all your windows match? — is no, it shouldn’t. However, since every home has unique requirements, it’s not a cut-and-dried answer. Some designs are served better with matching windows, others with a combination of different styles.

Your first consideration when getting replacement windows should be the individual needs of each room. Here are a few examples:

  • One of the rear-facing rooms could have a beautiful panoramic view, which means a picture window (or a bank of picture windows) would be more appropriate.

  • Exterior walls that face east to west would be receiving a lot of direct sunlight during certain hours of the day, which means the rooms will need windows that have sunlight-reducing glass, or at least have styles that work well with window treatments.

  • Upstairs bedrooms require egress windows, which may end up not matching the other windows in your home.

Another key consideration is whether you need to keep a certain look for your home. Unless you’re restoring an historical property, there really is no need to be held back by tradition. Traditional windows didn’t have insulated glass or composite frames, and adhering to tradition for its own sake could mean missing out or compromising on features that could improve energy efficiency and long-term performance.

Talk to your local window contractor at Renewal by Andersen of British Columbia if you need help choosing the right replacement windows. Give us a call at (604) 200-1025, or fill out our contact form to schedule a free consultation. We serve communities in Vancouver and Delta, BC.

Renewal by Andersen offers a wide range of expertly crafted custom windows. Our windows are manufactured just for you and are available in a variety of shapes and colours, grille patterns, and glass options. If you’re having trouble finding the right windows for your home, custom windows may be the perfect solution.

With custom windows, you can:

  • Add value to your home.

Homebuyers look to a home’s windows to provide curb appeal and as a measure of its condition. Updated windows increase a home’s perceived value, but stock windows from big box stores are often poorer quality, less durable, and may require additional structural work to install. Custom windows improve the value of your property while improving the view.

  • Update your aesthetic.

New windows can add beauty to your home, and a specialty custom window can have an even greater visual impact. When you’re remodeling or decorating, you’ll likely want the windows to complement the updated interior. You might want your windows to be larger, smaller, or even an unconventional shape to suit your room or furniture. Round, oval, and even triangular windows will fit spaces that standard windows can’t.

  • Keep energy costs down.

You’re throwing money “out the window” if your home has windows that are single-pane or are old and inefficient. Part of the reason custom windows achieve the highest energy efficiency is that they fit perfectly into the existing opening without any gaps between the window frame and walls. Renewal by Andersen is an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year; our windows take advantage of the newest technologies to help lower hydro bills and keep your home comfortable.

  • Experience easier installations.

Installing standard windows from a hardware store may be more complicated than you anticipate. You may need to trim out the wall or add some molding to make the window fit. Custom-made windows are made to the exact specifications of the space. They require less prep work and fewer additional materials to complete installation.

  • Have more light and space.

One of the main challenges with smaller rooms is allowing in enough light. A lack of natural light makes a room feel smaller. You can order custom windows to fit any wall in your home, no matter how small the room. The larger the window, the more light and space a room appears to have.

Renewal by Andersen can help you create the perfect window for your home. Our specialists will evaluate your current windows and suggest changes to add more light, space, and style to your home. They’ll even help you add a window to an existing space. Give us a call or fill out our contact form to schedule a free, no-obligation consultation. We offer window and door replacement services in the Greater Vancouver Area, the Fraser Valley, Victoria, Nanaimo, Campbell River, and the Okanagan.

Are you considering upgrading your windows with us? Congratulations! We can’t wait to help you enhance your home’s beauty, comfort, and energy efficiency. To ensure a successful design consultation and make the most out of the experience, we’ve compiled a quick guide on preparing for your consultation. Let’s dive in!

To fully prepare for your consultation, we recommend taking these steps:

1. Research and find inspiration.

Begin by gathering inspiration and ideas for your window project. Look through home design magazines, websites, and social media platforms for ideas on different window styles, materials, and finishes. Look at windows in your neighbourhood and take photographs of the ones you like. Pay attention to the architectural style of your home and consider how new windows can complement it. Make a list of features and functions that are important to you, such as operable or non-operable, noise reduction, energy efficiency, or privacy.

2. Identify problem areas and goals.

Identify any specific issues or problem areas related to your current windows. Is there a room that lacks natural light? Are you struggling with drafts or noise disturbance? By pinpointing these concerns, you can communicate them to your Design Consultant, ensuring that your needs are addressed.

Next, decide on your goals for the project. Do you want to improve the curb appeal of your home? Increase energy efficiency? Create a more open and spacious feeling indoors? This will help your consultant understand your vision and offer tailored solutions.

3. Determine your budget.

Figure out your budget for this project. Having a clear idea of your budget will help the consultant narrow down the available choices and suggest the most suitable window solutions for your needs. If you’re interested in financing, please ask about our Smart Pay programs.

4. Prepare your questions.

The design consultation is an opportunity for you to gather information. Preparing a list of questions to ask the consultant is always a good idea. For example, you may want to enquire about the quality of the materials, the warranty coverage, or the timeline for the project. Having questions ready will ensure you get all the information you need to make an informed decision.

5. Prepare the area.

Before the consultation, ensure the space around any windows or patio doors being discussed is clear. Remove any furniture, curtains, or blinds that might obstruct the consultant from seeing the windows or patio doors clearly and taking accurate measurements. This will allow for a more efficient and productive consultation.

6. Schedule the consultation.

We’d love to arrange a time for us to come talk with you about replacing your windows or patio doors. While in-person consultations are best, virtual consultations are also an option. During the consultation, we’ll design your new windows or patio doors, confirm product sizes and specifications, review our installation process from start to finish, and provide an information package and a full quote.

By following these steps, you will be well-prepared for your design consultation. If you aren’t able to follow all of them, please don’t worry. Remember, our experts are here to guide you through the process, answer your questions, and help you achieve the window transformation of your dreams. Ready to take the first step? Give us a call or fill out our contact form to schedule a free, no-obligation consultation. We offer window and door replacement services in the Greater Vancouver Area, the Fraser Valley, Victoria, Nanaimo, Campbell River, and the Okanagan.

When updating your home, it’s tempting to focus on new flooring and cabinets without thinking about the condition of your windows and patio doors. But updating windows and doors can give your home an instant face-lift and improve its curb appeal. Over time, windows and doors break down and wear out. If your windows are more than ten years old and haven’t been properly maintained, they may need repair or replacement.

Here’s what to watch out for:

  1. Poor operation. If your windows stick or have to be forced shut, it’s a sign that they may have poorly installed weather stripping. This allows air to escape through the frame and can allow moisture into your home during rainy seasons or winter months.
  2. There’s a draft. If you feel a draft coming through the edges of your windows, it usually means that the seals are faulty through bad weather stripping or faulty caulking.
  3. Utility bills are high. For maximum energy efficiency, make sure your windows are double-pane. Many older homes have single-pane windows that don’t provide enough insulation from outside temperatures. If this is the case, upgrading to double-pane windows will help improve energy efficiency.
  4. There’s fogging. When you see moisture between the panes of a window, it’s usually caused by seal failure, which is the loss of air between the two panes of glass. Not only does this let in outside moisture, but it reduces the window’s insulation.
  5. There’s water damage. Water damage from condensation or leaks occurs when windows aren’t properly installed or if the weather stripping is faulty. If you notice water leaking into your frame or wall, it is likely that mold and mildew will grow, leading to peeling paint or wallpaper and more significant damage.
  6. Window panes are cracked, chipped, or warped. If your window glass is cracked or chipped, it’s time to replace it. Broken window glass can be dangerous if not replaced promptly because it poses a risk of injury. Cracked or broken windows also let in more of the outside environment and make it easier for someone to break into your home.
  7. Window frames are rotten. If the wood around your window is soft, spongy, or waterlogged, it’s rotten. This can happen when windows aren’t properly sealed and too much moisture has come in contact with the wood. Check where your window frame meets the wall or siding; if there’s rot or decay, you’ll need to replace the entire unit.
  8. Windows look old or outdated. If you want to improve your home’s curb appeal, we recommend replacing outdated or unappealing windows. Our custom-made replacement windows offer a variety of styles and colour options so you can find the perfect fit for your home.

Give us a call today or fill out our contact forms to arrange a free consultation with one of our Design Consultants. We offer window replacement services in the Greater Vancouver Area, the Fraser Valley, Victoria, Nanaimo, and Campbell River

Vinyl is a popular material for window frames because it’s cheap, easy to clean, and durable, at least in the short run. But in Vancouver’s climate, where it’s cold and wet in winter and hot in summer, you may run into issues with your vinyl windows after just a few years. Here are four reasons why vinyl tends not to last in the long run.

1. It warps in the Vancouver weather.

Vinyl is the worst material out of aluminum, wood, glass, or Fibrex® for holding its shape when it comes to temperature changes. It will expand and contract readily under heat and cold. In Vancouver, temperatures can change by up to 10 degrees Celsius in just a few hours. This relatively rapid change puts stress on your vinyl frames.

The problem is that over time, the shape of your frame will change. You’ll end up with bent lines rather than the sharp ones you originally ordered. And it doesn’t just look bad; this reshaping and constant warping of the vinyl can result in some issues, explored below, that can get very costly very quickly.

2. The glass can sheer through the vinyl glazing.

Like we said, vinyl expands and contracts more than glass. Seven times more, in fact. So when you have a glass element attached to a vinyl element, you have one piece that’s moving around a lot and one that’s staying fairly still. This creates a lot of friction and can result in the glass sheering through the glazing.

3. Poor vinyl joinery can leak.

It’s not uncommon for older vinyl windows to have poor joinery. Between human error and inherent problems with the material itself, vinyl joinery is notoriously leak-prone. Poorly sealed vinyl window joints can cause water infiltration and lead to a host of problems. Leakage compromises the window’s energy efficiency and may damage walls, flooring, and furnishings. Over time, persistent dampness may result in mold growth and wood rot or structural damage which are all costly and time-consuming to repair.

4. Vinyl insulated glass seals can fail.

Vinyl-insulated glass seals are prone to the same problems that afflict all vinyl products: they weaken with age, they warp or crack in extreme temperatures, and they deteriorate in harsh weather conditions. These issues can cause the seals to weaken, crack, or deteriorate, compromising the window’s energy efficiency. When these seals fail, moisture enters the space between the glass panes, leading to condensation, fogging, and a reduction in the overall effectiveness of the windows.

All of the reasons above are why we use Fibrex for our window frame material. This patented composite material combines the strength and beauty of wood with the maintenance-free durability of vinyl. Fibrex will never require painting or sanding, and it won’t crack under the extreme conditions found here in Vancouver. It lasts for decades!

We pride ourselves on the quality of our materials and the expertise of our installations. But even the best windows installed with the best skill need some care and attention if they’re going to last you as long as possible. This quick guide will walk you through how to care for your Renewal by Andersen windows so that they last a lifetime. Don’t have Renewal by Andersen windows? See how easy they are to care for!

Glass Care

Renewal by Andersen replacement windows are equipped with High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass, which works together with our Fibrex® frames in providing long-term performance, beauty, and energy savings. The Low-E4 glass coating has been specially formulated for easy cleaning although there are things that even a high quality class coating can’t prevent, like dust, dirt, and the occasional stain from spills and splashes.

Cleaning the glass really couldn’t be easier. First, wipe the glass down with a soft dry cloth. This will remove dust and grime that might have built up.

Once you’ve wiped the window down, apply a mild cleaning solution. We recommend you use soapy water, diluted vinegar, or a liquid window cleaner. Use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe down the window in a circular motion.

To minimise residue on the glass, we recommend not applying glass cleaner in direct sunlight. Instead, clean between temperatures of 4°C-29°C.

Avoid abrasive cleaning products, scrub pads, and rust removers containing hydrofluoric acid, as they can cause permanent damage to the coating.

That’s it! It’s really that easy to keep your window glass shiny and clean. For best results, you should check your windows about once a week or so. The longer grime and dust have to build up on the glass, the harder it’ll be to remove them.

Fibrex Frame Care

We use our patented Fibrex material for all of our window frames. One of the biggest selling points of Fibrex is the ease of cleaning and maintaining it compared to other materials such as wood.

Simply wipe down frames, sash, and grilles with a mild solution of soapy water and a soft, non-abrasive rag or brush.

There is one catch: do not use newspaper or other ink-based papers. They can — and will — stain and discolour the Fibrex material. (Keep this in mind when wiping down your glass as well!)

Insect Screens

TruScene® insect screens have been designed to keep the bugs out and the light in. TruScene uses a fine mesh that’s a perfect barrier for insects but is fine enough that you hardly lose any light coming in your windows. That being said, if dust and debris build up on that mesh, it doesn’t matter how fine it is. You’re going to start losing light.

Use a soft, damp cloth to clean all screens. No soapy water or cleaning product is required. For a complete clean, you’ll want to remove the screen from the frame first. To do this:

  • Release the latches from the side jambs.
  • Hold the screen tight and gently push outwards to clear the sill.
  • Tilt the screen away from you and pull it inside.

Wipe down as needed and reverse the process to reinstall.

Lubrication and Corrosion Resistance

For those with casement, double-hung, gliding, or awning windows, or one of our patio doors, you’ll want to keep them well-lubricated. We recommend applying a dry lubricant once a year to all moving parts including hinges and rollers.

While our products are always designed to resist corrosion, you’ll need to give it a bit of a helping hand to keep it protected. Lubricants with corrosion inhibitors will keep your moving parts safer for longer in damp and humid environments.

Please note: do not use wet lubricants or harsh, solvent-based greases on your moving parts. These will not only damage your windows but will actually collect particles that promote corrosion.

With these simple steps, you’ll keep your Renewal by Andersen windows alive for longer. Don’t forget that all Renewal by Andersen windows come with our exceptional 20-2-10 limited warranty. That means 20-years limited warranty on glass, two-year limited warranty on installation, and ten-year limited warranty for all non-glass components.

Want your own easy-to-maintain windows? Give us a call today or fill out our contact forms to arrange a free consultation with one of our Design Consultants. We offer window replacement services in the Greater Vancouver Area, the Fraser Valley, Victoria, Nanaimo, and Campbell River.

We get a lot of questions this time of year asking if it’s a good idea to replace windows or doors before warmer weather arrives. Many people want to know more about how a window or door installation even works in the winter.

Our installers are best-in-class and have perfected the winter installation process. With our method, we work quickly and efficiently—never exposing your home to the harsh elements of winter. Most projects are completed in as little as one day—giving you immediate satisfaction with beautiful new windows and doors that improve the comfort of your home!

Here’s how it works:

  • Our installers seal off the room they’re working in. We use zip walls that enclose the area to keep pets, plants, and people comfortable in the rest of the home.
  • Zip walls prevent heat loss and ensure your home will have minimal exposure to the elements.
  • We cover and protect floors and furnishings from foot traffic, construction debris, and the harsh winter elements.
  • Two installers work on both the outside and inside of your home simultaneously.
  • The installers work on one window at a time, with each window being installed on average in as little as five minutes.
  • Each window is custom-manufactured to 1/8” of the opening so that installers can add additional insulation around the framework once they’re in place, helping to maximize energy efficiency.
